If travel is my first passion, beer is a close second. I'm a self-confessed beer nerd and when I travel I usually do a little research ahead of time, what are the most recommended breweries or brewpubs in the area and add some quality drinking time to my trip. I'm going to SF this week and Alaska in May and you better believe I already have my list put together.
I figured I'd make a list of the best breweries that I've hit up so far....in the US, I haven't done enough overseas yet, but here's my list so far of the creme de la creme
Allagash - Portland, ME....super generous with the tastings and the bourbon barrel room alone is worth going, besides they make excellent beer
Wicked Weed - Asheville, NC....top notch beer and a good rotating variety of beers and a way better than average menu of pub food
Holy City - North Charleston, SC.....large space with plenty of outdoor space with a firepit in winter, some excellent beers like their Hop Wrangler, one of the best IPAs i've had
Southbound - Savannah, GA.....the space is pretty industrial, but awesome staff, really good beers and they do some pretty funky stuff on tap there, like a blood orange shandy.
Three Taverns/Wild Heaven - Decatur/Avondale Estates, GA....I'm going to lump these two together because they're literally down the road from each other, heavily Belgian influenced and have large beautiful taprooms, it just depends what's on tap.
Motor City - Detroit, MI.....A total no pretense, no bullshit experience, and after, go to the Grand Trunk Pub downtown which has only Michigan beers on about 40 taps.
3 Floyds - Munster, IN......just outside of Chicago in the middle of nowhere, literally down the road from an airstrip. The space is nothing special, but excellent beer and a take out door next door for all your six pack and growler needs
Santa Fe - Santa Fe, NM.....grab a beer and a table on the deck upstairs, one of the most beautiful views to enjoy a beer.
Deschutes - Portland, OR.....massive industrial pub space, great beers and a cooler with beers to buy to go
Old Town - Portland, OR....I haven't been to the actual brewery, just their outpost in Old Town, first the space is awesome, an old brothel, sit at the bar and watch the scene outside and chat up the bartender
